I have tried 2 different interfaces, both of which are "dumb" (no associated software to mix or create this patch). The interfaces in question are the (cheap) Presonus AudioBox, and the Lexicon Lambda. I do not experience this on a MOTU 4Pre. The Input/Playback mixer knob on the front of the interface was partially turned to "Input".
